Summer is just around the corner here as we finish up the last couple weeks of the Spring semester. That means warm weather and plenty of sun. However, with the extra amount of exposure to sunlight and UV radiation, it is important to remember to take precautionary measures to prevent developing skin cancer. Possible methods include the following:
With the sun being out more often in the summer, it is important to seek shade under an umbrella or building whenever possible to get out of the harmful radiation.
What better way to prevent developing skin cancer than to completely avoid a source that just engulfs ones’ body in the harmful radiation?
It is of course impossible to stay under cover throughout the whole summer, and there will be undoubtedly times where one must be in the sun for an extended period. In these instances, it is important to wear clothing that will properly protect from UV, broad-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses (your eyes are important too).
Be sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day, and it is recommended for extended outdoor activity to use a water-resistant, broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher.
30 minutes before going outside, and be sure to reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
You know your body best. It is important to be aware of what is going on with your body, and checking yourself regularly can help detect and even prevent any further issues.
Even though you may be an expert on your body, it is also important to have a professional to perform a check up to make sure that everything is in order.

- Diameter (greater then 6 mm)
- Evolving (change in size, shape and color)
- Even borders
- Color uniform
- Diameter (smaller than 10 mm)
- Normal mole
